Dear r house couture,

I just wanted to take a minute and say THANK YOU for the beautiful necklace I won via the give away at birthmothers4adoption.blogspot.com. I was so excited and even more excited when it arrived just a couple of days before C's birthday. I knew that even though others might forget that it would be his birthday, I'd be honoring him privately all day long by wearing that necklace. 

On his birthday, he came over to my house for dinner and cake as that is our yearly tradition and his Mom was taking a few pictures of us for me. After a few snapshots, C lost interest but his mom still had my camera in her hands so I asked her to snap a close up of the necklace and explained that it was an adoption necklace. C over heard and said that he wanted to see and came over to look at it more closely as I explained what each piece symbolized. His Mom snapped a picture of him looking at it. While you can't see the necklace that great in this picture, I still love it and thought I'd share it with you guys. It was such a special and tender moment!

we tried to do something that tied together the entire adoption triad. this is what we thought: the ribbon charm represents being a birth mother and the birth mother's love just like you have on your site. the white pearl came from the white ribbon which represents adoption as a whole and the long charm with the initial at the bottom represents the child with their initial on it.

as an adoption mom, i love the white pearl on there. there are few people more precious than the birth mothers of my boys. there are few women i know who have sacrificed more. white just symbolizes something sacred ...and i needed to express that in this piece. ~mrs r

first an amendment to our giveaway from birthmother baskets. it turned out that the winner had received a basket just the week prior! so we re-randomized the nominations and JESSE nominated by megan at the arizona experiment was selected! congratulations jesse, we know you are very loved!

I nominated Jesse for the giveaway because I thought she could really use the extra hug in the form of a birth mother basket right now! I live across a state line and a 12-hour drive from her, so I'm not able to see her often. Jesse is a mother of two, birth mother to one, and is also expecting. She has made an adoption plan for her sweet baby girl due in November. I have known Jesse for a little more than 4 years now and I feel immeasurable love for her. I see her as an incredibly brave, smart, beautiful, and strong woman and I will forever be grateful (that word doesn't seem to adequately express how deeply I feel) that our paths have met in life. My name is Ashley Hansen Bigler and I am the author of Once Upon a Time: An Adoption Story. I didn't set out on this journey to become a published author. My main goal was to give my adopted children a voice. I wanted them to know how loved they are by us and by their birth families. When I adopted my first child, I couldn't find a single book that included a birth mother in the adoptoin story. How could there be an adoption story without a birth mother? That's when I decided to get my story in print. This is my daughter's story (she was even the model for the artist to use in the paintings). It is much like most infant/domestic adoption stories. The important thing is to use this book as a way to start the adoption conversation with your child at a very young age. Make changes in the story as it fits your journey. well, let me just tell you!! nah, better yet, ill let gina tell you, shes the mastermind and amazing  birthmother behind the whole wonderful thing....

welcome to birth mother baskets {bmb} oct 2009

The Birth Mother Baskets {bmb} actually started as a small service project for me to do for Christmas in 2002. I wanted to show support to other birth mothers and let them know it’s ok to talk about your placement, to be proud of your decision. I wanted something that the birth mothers could take home with them, after placement. I didn’t want them to go home with empty arms. That’s when I thought of a gift basket full of items, just for the birth mother, to show her she is not alone. I took ALL the resources I had at that time (which wasn’t much). I then called around to every local business that I thought might donate. My small goal of filling 20 baskets became 60 and I was thrilled with the response. I then distributed them to local hospitals and social services to give to each birth mother.

With such a great outpouring, by those around me, I was able to continue filling baskets for about four years! Some of these donations came from businesses, friends or speaking engagements that I have done here locally. In those four years, I have successfully filled over 300 baskets!!
Mostly, running it on my own and out of our tiny condo. The local social services and hospitals were constantly stocked with gift baskets. It was truly an amazing blessing!

These gift baskets hold so much more than just the tangible items inside of them. They are filled with LOVE, warmth and support. Many of these birth mothers have no family support, no friends and no one to tell them what to expect in their journey, of placement. {bmb} provides a loving voice saying, “you are NOT alone, you are loved, you are brave and yes someone has felt this unbearable pain before.” {bmb} give the mothers something to take home, with them from the hospital. No birth mother should leave the hospitals or social services with empty arms. I have seen first hand, a brand new birth mother leave with a {bmb} in her arms and a smile on her face, with a peace in her mind that she too, had just made the best decision for her baby. I know, with all of my heart that these baskets provide a moment of stillness for these birth mothers, whose emotions will become so deep in their first few days of placement. My hope is that they will, for just a moment, feel that ache disappear by placing a {bmb} in their arms. I will do ALL that I possibly can do to fill these baskets. I know, truly, they are so much more then just a gift basket.

As the years have gone by, my speaking opportunities have slowed down and my resources are becoming drained. I’d hate to see this year go by without one single basket being filled. 
Please, help me tell these birth mothers they are appreciated.
Let them know there are thousands of adoptive couples or families whose lives have been touched by adoption. Please, help me thank these brave women for truly giving the greatest gift of all... selfless LOVE.

(this was assuming i liked what the book said). when i read it, i immediately loved it. it said so much of how my experience was, it wasnt word for word exact and there were a few differences in timeline or reasoning, but the gist was the same, and...

it. was. perfect. 

i was excited to give it as a xmas gift, and i knew that pokepoke's adopted older brother would probably benefit from it too. i was a little nervous what his mom and dad would think, you never know what the Aparents are going to think about the things you give their kids. i added a special inscription to the inside cover and wrapped it up. he opened it and reacted about how youd expect an 18 mos old to react to a book. lol The coolest part though - his mom loves the book, she has since mentioned it three times! specifically, how much she loves the way its written, what it says, and how it talks about the decision to place being made out of love. i know that her boys are going to grow up with this book being a constant in theirs lives, and that warms my heart.

thank you kelsey for providing a way for me to give this gift to my lil pokepoke- the gift of understanding, that i indeed chose what i believed to be the very best for him.

take a look at their pieces, read the descriptions, the sentiments, the reasons they chose to make the pieces they did, get a feel for their style and their creations..... then..... come back to this post and tell us what you think the perfect birthmother necklace/jewelry would look like, what shapes, what colors, what sentiments, what wordings, what would it 'look' like, what would it represent, what would it 'feel' like. be specific, use details, be creative. remember they are fabulous with incorporating custom ideas.

logo contest UPDATE

its time we have a logo for this website! a logo will better help us network with other adoption sites, create recognition in the virtual adoption community and therefore further extend the outreach to fellow birthmothers. the logo will also be used as a 'button' that can be easily posted on other blogs for quick and easy linkups.

we are asking YOU, our creative and adoption inspired readers, to submit a logo, (or logos if youre creative juices are overflowing!) to add an element of fun, weve made it a contest!

6 logos will be selected that we, the blog administrators, feel best represents adoption, birthmothers, and the positive vibes that this blogsite represents.  then, the world will have their chance to vote on those 6 logos and the winner will be just that, the winner! there is a small prize involved, besides the notoriety that will certainly get you immense recognition for the rest of your life! ;-)

some suggestions, but most certainly not requirements... pink is the awareness color that represents birthmothers, white is the awareness color that represents adoption. also keep in mind this blogsite address is 'birthmothers4adoption.blogspot.com' - obviously we promote and celebrate adoption! the blogsite was created as a mechanism to share, support, and connect to other birthmothers. 

details have been changed about the contest. including:
~the deadline to submit logos has been extended to midnight july 3, 2010 MST.  
~there is no limit to how many logos you can submit. but please dont submit 10 different logos that are exactly the same except they are in 10 different colors, or similar situations.

~please spread the word on your blog or adoption friendly website encouraging logo entries
